Stories from Our Kitchen Table - Anthony Munene

Anthony Munene who served as the Program Director of the New American Sustainable Agriculture Program for roughly a decade at ORIS has recently moved on to work at American Farmland Trust and run his own farm, Two Mountain Farm in Andover, NH. Anthony made a huge impact on Fresh Start Farms & ORIS and has had a hand in growing the program into what it is today. Thankfully, although no longer working at ORIS, Anthony continues to support the Fresh Start Farmers in his new role.

Last month, Anthony was interviewed by the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group and discussed his experiences with land access, the difficulties immigrant farmers of color face, and the challenges in establishing farm sites for ORIS.

“One of the main experiences I have had over the years has been around land access because, of course, to be able to grow food appropriate to your culture – ethnic food from where you come from – you need land. Accessing land has been a very big challenge on this journey, and also the resources that you need to be able to farm” Anthony explains in the interview. Anthony gives a great window into the perspective and experiences of the Fresh Start Farmers so we hope you’ll take the time to read this insightful interview here.

*Note that there is a misprint in this article that states ORIS is in Rhode Island instead of New Hampshire.
