Pizza Sauce & Farm to School

This summer, the USDA awarded Fresh Start Farms, and our project partners, a two-year Farm-to-School grant to improve access to local food for Manchester & Nashua school children. Local farmers, processors, and community organizations will collaborate with students, teachers, and food service staff to bring more locally-produced foods into schools and deliver a hands-on school meal education initiative.

This spring, students will plant tomato seedlings and participate in hands-on workshops exploring the local food system, food equity, and the stories of NH people who grow and harvest food. Fresh Start Farmers and community gardeners will grow the tomatoes this summer and once the tomatoes are harvested, the local NH processor, Genuine Local, will turn the tomatoes into pizza sauce. The pizza sauce will be included with a kit of other locally sourced ingredients for select schools to make flatbreads for the students on “Flatbread Fridays”!

Last week, Genuine Local turned Fresh Start Farm’s tomatoes into the first batch of pizza sauce! $5 a jar, try it out with the Bread Shed’s Whole Wheat Pizza Dough!

Final Week of the Concord Farmers Market Oct. 30!

The farmers market season is coming to an end and next Saturday is the final market in Concord. We’re so thankful to the wonderful loyal customers who join us each week to support Fresh Start Farms and enjoy locally grown veggies!

Expanded Hours at Fresh Start Market!

The Fresh Start Market will now be open on Tuesdays from 11am to 4pm! We are so excited to be opening for another day to bring fresh and local food to the neighborhood. Our fall hours are now Tuesdays 11am to 4pm and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2pm to 6pm. We hope you’ll stop in and check it out!

New! Pastured Eggs form LaValley Farm

We have been in search of an NH egg producer that can accommodate the demand from our FarmShare and we are excited to be transitioning to LaValley’s eggs for the upcoming season. LaValley’s hens enjoy a cage-free and barn-free existence. The chickens roam freely across the 60 acres of farmland in Hooksett/Allenstown, eat a diet of only natural ingredients, and rotate around the farm to help with fertilization. The hens love grass, but their favorite at this time of year is eating all the squash and melon they want! We have 15 dozen this week, so give them a try and let us know what you think.

Recipes

of the Week

Celeriac (a.k.a. celery root) is a knobby, bulbous root vegetable that is often overlooked, but is such a delicious and versatile vegetable. Raw, celeriac has fantastic crunch and a super nutty, celery-like flavor that makes it perfect for salads and slaws. Cooked, it takes on a slight sweetness that works well mashed, baked, roasted or boiled. It is an extraordinary vegetable that’s worth adding to your fall repertoire!

This week, try out some Celeriac & Potato Latkes and add some Garlic & Herb Goat Cheese Dip for a delectable combo!
