Greetings from Fresh Start Farms!

Week 12 marks the final week of the Fall FarmShare. We are so thankful for your support this season and we hope you and your family enjoyed some delicious meals made with fresh food, grown right in your community. From everyone at Fresh Start Farms, thank you!

The hard frost brought the last harvest this week for the Concord farmers who don’t yet have greenhouses. Alice, Amisa, Batulo, Cecilia, Daniel, Elizabeth, Godance, Harimaya, Jeanette, Joseline, Josephin Margarita, Mukamujeni, and Sibomana will now work on cleaning up their farms and preparing to move to a new plot of land on St. Paul’s campus for next season.

Thanks to their season-extending greenhouses, the Dunbarton farmers have a while more to harvest and will be providing veggies, along with other area farms, for the 5-week Winter FarmShares. Have you signed up yet?

This week, we are excited about organic sweet potatoes, beautiful white cauliflower, a large variety of apples, fennel, green and sweet peppers, leeks, delicata and spaghetti squash, and lots more! Plus, an end-of-season sale on whole Common Wealth Chickens for just $15

This is the last week to sign up for your local Turkey! Enjoy a local, fresh turkey from Stonewood Farm for your Thanksgiving feast and pre-order by this Friday Nov. 12.

FruitShare Update

Standard FruitShare: Shizuka Apples, Certified Ecologically Grown by Scott Farm Orchard.

  • Shizuka Apples are Golden Delicious apples crossed with Indo (a sweet Japanese apple that originated in the 1930s). Known for their intense sweetness and distinctive light, crisp flesh, comparable to Honeycrisp. Excellent for eating fresh & to slice into a salad (this variety does not brown quickly once cut).

Large FruitShare:  Shizuka Apples & 2 Heirloom Apples Certified Ecologically Grown by Scott Farm Orchard:

  • Baldwin apples are one of the best New England apples, and one of the oldest. Its cream-white flesh is crisp and juicy. It is aromatic with a spicy, sweet-tart flavor, and holds its shape when cooked. Outstanding apple for fresh eating.
  • Roxbury Russet apples are believed to be the oldest apple cultivar bred in the United States, having been discovered in the mid-17th century in Roxbury MA. A sweet apple, firm and great for cider and fresh eating.

Baer’s Best has been growing heirloom beans in Maine for over 30 years! We have 4 varieties of dried beans from this year’s harvest:

  • Heirloom Bean Soup Mix
  • Soldier Beans
  • Yellow Eye Beans
  • Light Red Kidney Beans

Many years ago beans were a New England staple and some local people still remember the Saturday night traditional meal of baked beans and brown bread. Now many people are rediscovering the benefits and pleasures of having beans as a regular part of their diet and finding new ways to enjoy specialty beans. Not sure how to cook dried beans? Check out this guide to cooking dried beans from Love & Lemons.

New flavor from Jaju! Cabbage & Mushroom Pierogis

Founded by two sisters using their grandfather’s recipes, Jaju Pierogi makes pierogi from scratch in Lynn, MA.

Made with tangy sauerkraut, and balanced with sauteed mushrooms, onions, and buttery potatoes, this is a Eastern European tradition. We recommend pairing with some sour cream!

Dairy Items

Grafton Village 1-Year Cheddar cheese is aged for one year to achieve the classic New England cheddar profile: comforting, lightly tangy, and rich. Try it paired with fresh grapes or sliced fresh apples for a juicy counterpoint to its rich and buttery flavors. 1 Year Cheddar is also perfect for melting.

Blue Ledge Farm’s Camembrie is made with fresh Ayrshire cow’s milk and is a smooth mold-ripened Camembert/Brie hybrid! A buttery slice of bovine heaven! Goes well with a light red or white wine. A great match for any type of cured meats as well!

Smith’s Dill Havarti Cheese is smooth and buttery-perfect for a grilled cheese sandwich or to pair with your favorite crackers and fruit. All of their cheeses are made fresh on the farm with rich milk directly from 200 dairy cows.
