Greetings from Fresh Start Farms!

Happy Labor Day Weekend! This Monday we celebrate the contributions and achievements of all workers and particularly our local farmers and agricultural producers who keep us fed with fresh, local, and nutritious food.

In order for farmers and staff to observe the holiday, you will be receiving your FarmShare customization email this afternoon. You will have until the normal time (Tuesday at 2 pm) to make changes to your share. Deliveries and pickups will operate on the normal schedule. This week, you may see some substitutions in your FarmShare since the amounts of crops available were estimated today and might be off a bit by the harvest next week. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding!
Fresh Start Farms assists new Americans to build sustainable farm enterprises by increasing land access, building reliable markets for farmers and providing technical training support.

The FarmShare serves as a reliable market for the Fresh Start Farmers and a valuable training opportunity. Operating the FarmShare as a training program for new American farmers requires a lot of creativity and flexibility. Many of the Fresh Start Farmers do not speak English, so each step in the food ordering process requires a creative solution. Using photos and voice messages, farmers let staff know what they have available for harvest on their farm in the upcoming week. Once all 23 farmers have submitted their crops ready for harvest, staff aggregates the crop list and works to create orders for each farmer based on what will sell the upcoming week, with special attention to dividing orders equally. Once orders are created, voice messages are sent to some farmers who speak English, and for others, a system of photos of vegetables with the number to be ordered is used. See the photo on the left for an example order sent to a farmer. Slowing down the process and using teamwork and creativity is essential for success!

Share the bounty of the peak harvest season by contributing to the Fresh Start Food Donation Fund! With your support we provide fresh, local vegetables to low-income individuals in our community. We need your help to make sure the abundance of Fresh Start veggies get to those who need it in Manchester, Concord, and Nashua.

You will be contributing to the success of the Fresh Start Farmer’s businesses while also supporting the well-being of your neighbors in need. Together we can build a community that is fair, inclusive, and provides for everyone.

Grilling season isn’t over yet!

We have two great sauces for grilling – Our Local Table’s Honey Sweet Barbeque Sauce and Ruth’s Sweet Grillin’ Glaze!

Our Local Table’s Honey Sweet Barbeque Sauce is THE perfect BBQ sauce for everyone in the family. The natural honey base provides the sweetness, but the rich flavor will be a favorite of everyone!

Ruth’s Sweet Grillin’ Glaze is great on chicken, fish and pork.  Add glaze during the last 15 minutes of cooking.  Slather, grill and enjoy!  Ruth Mustard products are inspired by Laurel’s grandmother’s recipes.  Ruth loved to feed her family and help those in need.  In her honor, 10% of all profits go to “feed the need of others” .

Sherpa Foods Restock!!

The Momos, Nepalese Dumplings, we brought in last week sold out in the first day so we’ve brought in their Vegan Chowmein and Vegan Fried Rice in addition to Chicken Momos, Pork Momos, and Vegetable Momos!

A Burlington, VT based family food business, Sherpa Foods crafts authentic traditional Nepalese foods with local, fresh, and natural ingredients.

Momos are the Nepalese versions of dumplings made as comfort food during special gatherings for guests. Served with Himalayan-style sauce, they make a terrific quick meal for when you don’t have time to cook but still want to eat a locally-made, delicious, and healthy meal!

Maine Grain’s Organic Cornmeal is made from organically grown open pollinated yellow flint corn. At Maine Grains, they grind their cornmeal coarse on an Austrian traditional stone mill. This cornmeal is delicious in cornbread, Muufo Flatbread, muffins, waffles, hush puppies and to coat fried seafood!

Dairy Items

Plymouth’s Garlic Peppercorn Cheese is inspired by the flair and finesse of the French kitchen, with its proud and vivacious character and the savory elements of onion, garlic, red peppers—and of course, green peppercorns. The poir vert tradition holds strong in France, where chefs bow to this verdant variety of the peppercorn, which shows up in sauces as well as in cheese. This raw cheddar is marbled, which makes it (much like the French) as pretty as it is complex. It is aged for sixty days, yielding an upbeat and creamy granular curd cheese that tastes like a whole dinner in just one bite.

Founded in 1890, Plymouth is a family-run cheese factory in Vermont. They use only the finest, pasture-rased raw cow’s milk — free of additives, antibiotics and rBST — sourced from a single dairy herd from a sustainable, seventh-generation family farm 40 minutes up the road.

End of summer sale — $4!!

Vermont Creamery’s classic, mild fresh goat cheese hand-rolled in wild blueberries, candied lemon peel, and fragrant thyme.

Protein Items

Vermont Bean Crafter’s Harvest Veggie Burgers are made with oven-roasted sweet potatoes, corn, fresh parsley and carrots, plus a maple-chipotle BBQ sauce to brighten the burger’s savory soul. Organic and plant-based food made right in Vermont!

As the weather turns colder and the fall approaches, its the perfect time to roast an all-natural, 100% pasture free-ranging, growth hormone/antibiotic-free, and local chicken from Robie Farm. Plus, we have a poultry herb mix available this week with sage, thyme, and rosemary!

Robie Farm is a small family farm owned and operated on the banks of the Connecticut River in Piermont, NH. All of their chickens are humanely raised right on their farm in movable pens on pastures (as opposed to indoor confinement).

Thank you & we'll see you soon!
