The summer is well-underway and all-in-all, it’s been a pretty wet one! According to the Northeast River Forecast Center (a division of the National Weather Service) Merrimack County received 8.76 inches of rain during the month of July, which is 4.46 inches more than previously recorded amounts! We are very lucky that the farms in Dunbarton, Concord, and Boscawen were not damaged during the massive storms that caused major flooding throughout VT and other NE states. While crops certainly thrive when precipitation is abundant, the intensity and quantity of precipitation can lead to a major loss of topsoil, which removes key nutrients from soil and leads to erosion and runoff into surrounding areas.
The Fresh Start Farmers have been braving the rainy weather to keep harvesting lots of vegetables! Tomatoes are starting to come in, along with some peppers and eggplant! Thank you farmers for all of your hard work.
