Opportunities to Grow

Autumn is here, school is well underway, and the routines of our lives keep us moving at a pretty fast pace. Sometimes it can be hard to find excitement in our day-to-day tasks; but our environment changes all around us, all the time, offering up opportunities to grow. Lots of things are growing here at Fresh Start Farms, and it’s not just the amazing fruits and veggies:  eight new greenhouses are under construction at the NEW Concord farm site on Silk Farm Road! We are very excited for our Umoja Farmers to move there next season.

We are appreciative of our farmers for braving the rainy weather as of late–we are glad for the rain but it sure makes harvesting more challenging. But, there are still plenty of vegetables growing! Winter squashes, peppers, superfood greens, carrots…lots of things to stock up on as the weather gets a little cooler.

Healthy Corners Initiative to Launch this Week

Our Fresh Start Farms Food Hub and the Manchester Department of Health (MHD) are collaborating to implement the Healthy Corners Program to expand healthy food access in Manchester. Many areas of Manchester do not have adequate access to supermarkets or are considered food deserts. Therefore, the aim of the Healthy Corners Program is to  increase the availability of fresh, healthy food at corner stores by providing marketing, technical, and logistical support to make selling fresh food both feasible and profitable. Six corner stores have been selected to participate in the first cohort: these stores will be able to order fresh food at wholesale prices from the Fresh Start Farms Food Hub on a weekly basis, as well as receive free marketing, necessary equipment to sell these items, and further assistance. Stay tuned in the weeks to come for more updates on this program.
