Greetings from Fresh Start Farms!

Happy 4th of July weekend! The beginning of July brings lots of new crops with it. Sugar snap peas, basil, and the first flushes of zucchini and summer squash are here. Picking peas is labor-intensive, thanks to Warner Farm, Sylvain, Fadumo and Khamis for bringing in lots of these crunchy, sweet delicious summer treats this week.

We are definitely in the green bounty of early summer and the kale, chard, collards, and lettuce are begging to be picked every week. Get excited about raspberries from Fadumo and Khamis!

4th of July Schedule Changes

Monday Members: There will be no FarmShare delivery on Monday, July 4th. Your share will instead be delivered on Wednesday, July 6th. You’re receiving your customization email today and you will have until Sunday at midnight to make swaps and additions.

Wednesday Members: You are receiving your share as normal on Wednesday, July 6th. You are however receiving your customization email today, and you will have until Sunday at midnight to make swaps and additions.

During the holiday week, you may see some substitutions in your FarmShare since the amounts of crops available will be estimated on Friday and might be off a bit by the harvest on Tuesday. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding!

Recipes

of the Week

Kale yeah!

Kale is an extremely nutrient-dense vegetable and is rich in Vitamins A, K, C, Manganese, Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium. The health benefits are numerous and include supporting eye and bone health, building strong immune systems,  and protecting against heart disease.

Kale is a member of the cabbage family and can be eaten raw or cooked. Try out kale as a snack in kale chips, in a smoothie, raw in a salad like Kale Caesar Salad, made into pesto, or sauteed with pasta! You can use kale just like you would any other dark leafy greens like spinach. Get creative and enjoy this abundant green!
